Victor's Complete Recordings of Popular Pre-War American Baritone Lawrence Tibbett (1896-1960) Lawrence Tibbett (November 16, 1896-July 15, 1960) was the most famous pre-World War II baritone, popular for his large scale, deep voice and excellent acting ability. He was the most famous American star baritone before World War II, popularized by his large scale, deep voice and excellent acting ability. He studied at the Los Angeles School of Drama and Music and began his singing career in San Francisco. He then moved to New York City, where several recital opportunities brought attention to his beautiful voice, and at the age of 26 he signed his first contract with the Metropolitan Opera. In 1925, he sang the role of Ford as second baritone in the Met's first production in 15 years of Verdi's "Falstaff" (conducted by Tullio Serafin), where he sang the monologue "Dream or Reality" in the second act to such acclaim that he eclipsed the lead role. Since then, he has sung mainly Italian and French operas as the leading baritone at the same opera house.As a particularly strong "Verdi baritone," he was highly acclaimed in the title roles of "Rigoletto" and "Simon Boccanegra," Father Germont in "La Traviata," Carlo in "La Forza del Destino," and Jago in "Otello. He also appeared in many Hollywood films, taking advantage of his extensive stage experience. He appeared on the MET stage a total of 602 times in 49 roles during his career, and also made frequent appearances in Chicago and at the San Francisco Opera. However, his beautiful voice began to fade rapidly around 1940, and he gradually lost his fame due to arthritis and alcohol abuse problems. This set (10 CDs) is based on more than 100 songs that Tibbett recorded for RCA Victor between 1925 and 1940. It also includes recordings for films in which he appeared, as well as selections from radio broadcasts that have never been available on CD.The booklet includes many rare photographs and a comprehensive essay by author and critic Conrad Osborne on Tibbett's life, career, and recording legacy.
