Conductor Laureate Haitink - RCO 50th Anniversary Live - Mahler's Fourth Symphony On November 7, 1956, at the young age of 27, Haitink replaced the ill Giulini on the podium of the RCO for the first time. Half a century later, on his golden wedding anniversary last November 7, the now laureate conductor returned to RCO Live for a special commemorative concert featuring the second half of the evening's all-Mahler program, Symphony No. 4 (the first half featuring Larsson and Dean). （Haitink is recognized by all as one of the greatest Mahler conductors of our time, and his latest album features the second half of the evening's all-Mahler program, the Symphony No. 4 (with Larsson and Dean Smith singing the first half, "Ode to the Earth").The RCO's first SACD release of No. 4 is a true testament to Haitink and the RCO's trademark Mahler performance, The RCO's first SACD release of the No. 4 is a new and widely acclaimed performance of Mahler's music, a trademark of both Haitink and the RCO. The ties that Haitink has nurtured with his longtime colleagues remain strong, even in this new era under the leadership of Chief Conductor Jansons. The concert was a celebration of a special occasion, and the golden brass and elegant, lush strings shone through. The fourth movement depicts a heavenly world.The soprano on point has been graced with the colors of Amerling, Ewing, Alexander, and other greats of the past, and now Schaeffer has been selected for the role. Her lovely voice fits her perfectly, and she is very attractive. Since last November, the duo has performed No. 4 five times in their home base in Amsterdam, all with Schaeffer singing solo, in addition to this commemorative concert on November 7, and also at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt on November 9 and the Musikverein in Vienna on November 10. Haitink's Mahler concerto No. 3 (CSOR.901701) with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at his inaugural concert as chief conductor in October of that year was also a big hit, but his recent performances have been so full that one cannot take one's eyes off of him for even a moment.
