Pranez, a master of playing the complete Chopin Nocturnes on an 1836 Pleyel, has recorded the complete Chopin Nocturnes. Planès has previously recorded Debussy and Chopin, choosing the best period instruments for each repertoire. The instrument used by Pranez this time is an 1836 Pleyel concert grand. This instrument was made right around the time when most of the Nocturnes were written. This instrument is larger than the standard model (2.40 meters) and already possesses a volume comparable to a modern piano. The three registers - the light, harp-like high register, the velvety middle register, and the round, clear low register - blend and resonate better than a modern piano with a uniform tone. Chopin's "Bel Canto" showed him a new approach to making the piano sing, and Pranez brilliantly brings out the best of his creativity in these compositions with a unique palette of tones. Born in 1948, Pranez began playing the piano at the age of five and performing with an orchestra at the age of eight.He studied piano with Jean Doyen and chamber music with Jacques Fevrier at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, and came to the United States in 1970 to join Menahem Pressler at Indiana University. In 1977, he returned to France to work as a soloist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, performing at various festivals (until 1981).
