Also includes six Sinfonia ornamental drafts and Invention BWV772a In the booklet commentary, musicologist and pianist Raymond Erickson notes that the 15 two-voice Inventions and 15 three-voice Sinfonias played an important role in Bach's teaching. Although these pieces are today primarily intended as basic piano exercises, they are by no means easy, and are in fact sophisticated, small-scale masterpieces: the 30 pieces are short, but each gracefully depicts a unique, often playful world. They are well worth a close listening, either alone or in sequence. Yuan Shen's playing is carefully crafted, making full use of the tonal possibilities and articulatory versatility of the modern piano, but without deviating from Bach's style. The binding is digipack, and the insert booklet (28 pages in English) includes a detailed commentary by musicologist and pianist Raymond Erickson, etc. Made in the EU, the discs are manufactured by Optimal Media of Germany, a well-known major-label company.
