Description:

The Venetian composer and instrumentalist Dario Castello (b. c. 1630), of whom no details of his life are known, was active at the same time as Monteverdi and was probably associated with the Basilica di San Marco, where Monteverdi served as director of music. It is said that Castello's works were published more widely than Shakespeare's in the 17th century. Castello's works were more widely published than Shakespeare's in the 17th century. Richard Egger, Director of Music at the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM), is the lead advocate for the study of Castello's life and conducts the entire recording, playing organ and harpsichord, as well as recording Castello's most important work, the "Sonata Concertante Contemporanea," Volume 1. Volume 1, is being recorded. The 29 works by Castello, all of which require a high level of technical skill to perform, are all virtuosic on their individual solo instruments, and the freedom of the recitative is wonderful, and the style, which must have been cutting edge at the time, is aptly titled "modern".The "Violetta," an instrument rarely heard of today, was used from the 16th to 18th centuries, and the instrument used here is probably the "Bass Violetta Brazzo," which is tuned one octave below the violin. Joseph Crouch, the player, says, "I bought this instrument only out of curiosity two years before the recording, so I am very happy that I never thought I would have the chance to use it. The "dulcian" is the prototype of the bassoon, which was known in 17th century Italy as "an instrument of outstanding skill. Benny Agassi, the player, said, "I had never practiced this instrument before, but I practiced very hard for this recording. It was a wonderful experience. Naxos Japan
