From the bass funk of the opening track "Swiftly (The Right One)," a perfect juxtaposition to earlier Nightmares on Wax and Mo' Wax releases in the DJ set, to the Augustus Pablo-inspired "Stonebridge Warrior to the spacy, psychedelic dub of "That's More Like It" and "Off The Spectrum," to the emotionally charged, soulful, warm R&B of "Whatever It Takes," the sound of this album is surprisingly diverse. A hint of this eclectic approach can be found in "The People's Sound," the second-to-last track, which pays tribute to West London sound system operator Daddy Vego. All of these tracks fit the blues parties and shubby dances that the band members grew up with, and their influences form an essential part of their musical DNA.Producer Adrian Sherwood continues to be a scene-stealer, releasing his first spatial audio work, "On-U in Space". For "Hostile Environment," he continues to use his tricks, teaming up with the amazing player and longtime friend Creation Level to create a masterpiece that brings together all of their talents.
