Description:
Edward McDowell is an American pianist and composer who studied in Europe for a long time. Perhaps because of his influences from many different cultures, the music he creates is very original. Born in New York, he took lessons from the famous pianist Teresa Carreño and other musicians from Colombia, Cuba, and Venezuela. 17 years old, he studied at the Paris Conservatory and later at the Frankfurt Conservatory, where he studied composition with Joachim Ruff. He became interested in Clara Schumann and Liszt, and joined the Leipzig publishing house Breitkopf & Hertel. 1888 he returned to the U.S. and settled in Boston, where he began his career as a composer and concert pianist. 1896 he moved to New York, Teaching at Columbia University, McDowell founded the university's first music department. McDowell's inspiration, both poetic (Goethe and Heine) and musical (Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms), came from German romanticism.The recording "Sketches in the Forest" is a charming, seductive, elegant and nostalgic character piece reminiscent of Grieg and Schumann, and is indicative of this composer at his peak. The performer, Giorgio Trione Bartoli (b. 1996), graduated from the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He is a prize-winning pianist at numerous competitions, including the Venice International Piano Competition.
