Description:

A major project has begun to explore the whole picture of the 20th century French organ master Langlais! This is the first volume of a major project. It is supervised by organist Giorgio Benati, who was a pupil of Langrée, and the booklet commentary is also written by Benati. The recordings were made with instruments selected from various Italian churches to suit the style and requirements of the music, and in addition to Benati, Fausto Caporari, an expert in French organ music, joined the project to explore Langrée's vast legacy. In addition to the organ pieces, there are also works for harmonium. Langley's music, which combines traditional styles with modern techniques, is known for its rich yet accessible variety of moods, dynamics, textures, and harmonies, and for its beautiful use of church melody. Langrée was also a stickler for registration, so the new recording is a welcome addition. About LangréeJean Langrée was born on February 15, 1907 in La Fontenelle, Brittany, and was blinded by congenital glaucoma at the age of two. In addition to piano, violin, and harmony, he studied organ with the renowned blind musician Albert Maud [1867-1943] and André Marchal [1894-1980] (the origin of this school was the Royal School for the Blind with 120 students, authorized and financed by Louis XVI in 1786, which was also the home of the inventor of Braille Louis Braille [18509-1852], inventor of Braille, was also a graduate). Langrée then studied organ with Marcel Dupré [1886-1971] at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris, where she won first prize in 1930, and improvisation with Charles Tournemire [1870-1939], winning the "Grand Prix de Organ Improvisation" in 1931, and then with Paul He also studied composition under Paul Ducasse [1865-1935] and was awarded the Prix de Composition in 1934. After graduation, he took a teaching position at the National Institute for Visually Impaired Youth in Paris, a position he held for 40 years, while also teaching at the Schola Cantorum in Paris from 1961 to 1976, where he trained many students. In 1945, he was appointed organist at the prestigious Sainte-Clotilde Cathedral in Paris, where César Franck and Tournemire also held positions, and where he performed for 42 years until 1987. During that time, Langley was active worldwide as a concert organist, giving more than 300 concerts in the United States. His energetic activities also extended to composition, and by the time of his death in Paris on May 8, 1991, at the age of 84, he had composed 254 works for organ, voice, and instrumental music.
