Lily Allen (daughter of comedian Keith Allen) got off to a flying start with her single “Smile” reaching No. 1 in the UK and her debut album hitting No. 2, delivering a masterpiece that lived up to the hype of being the “female version of The Streets.” Or perhaps she could even be called the “UK version of Nelly McKay.” Her lyrics, which seamlessly switch between singing and rapping, are both radical and side-splittingly funny. While essentially a candid diary of a 21-year-old, she uses her cool voice to tear apart idiotic men and paint a picture of London’s dangerous underbelly, only to suddenly reveal a deeply sensitive side, laying bare her wildly fluctuating inner emotions with exquisite verbal skill. Production-wise, she collaborated with four British and American artists, including Future Cut (known for drum and bass) and Mark Ronson. Centered on two-tone and ska, with lounge and Latin elements woven in, and combined with her old-school melodic sensibility, she has established a truly unique sound.
