The young Shula Cherkassky! 78rpm recording reissued in its entirety! Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Shula Cherkassky (1909-1995) was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, who fled to the United States to avoid the effects of the Russian Revolution. Of the many recordings by Cherkassky, who had the distinguished pedigree of being a pupil of Josef Hoffmann and was considered one of the last "Romantics," this is the first complete collection of his early recordings bequeathed to 78rpm (SP) records by Victor, Columbia, Vox, Cupol, HMV and others. Much of the repertoire is unique in his discography, including his only chamber music recording, Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata. Cherkassky also recorded Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 several times, but the 1946 recording (conducted by Rachmirovich and the Santa Monica Symphony) is also his earliest concerto recording, and is a rare first CD release never before reissued.The reissue was handled by Seth Winner, a renowned engineer who has been nominated for the Grammy Award for "Best Historical Album" three times.
