Description:
The progressive rock movement in the UK, which gained momentum in the late 1960s, had a profound influence on local bands across Europe, helping to transform the movement into something even larger. Among these, the emergence and rise of the Dutch progressive rock band Focus in the UK and US in 1972 was particularly noteworthy. Influenced by classical and jazz, their sound—though primarily instrumental—swept the UK and US charts, recording sales on par with the top British progressive rock bands. Now, an archive of Focus at the height of their career is available on CD!
Focus, which reached No. 8 on the U.S. album charts thanks to the smash hit “The Devil’s Spell” from their second album *Moving Waves* (released in 1971), saw their 1973 release *Focus III (original title: Focus 3), which was released the following year in 1973, was also a hit like its predecessor, reaching No. 35 on the US album charts and earning a gold disc. Riding this momentum, the band embarked on a 100-show North American tour. During that tour, their March 23 concert in New York was recorded and broadcast on PBS Radio for album promotion. This release is a live album based on that recording, featuring a complete recording of the concert, including the encore.
Composed of tracks from their two hit albums, it fully captures the appeal of Focus at the height of their career. In particular, Jan Akkerman’s guitar playing—which was voted number one in a poll by Melody Maker magazine, replacing Eric Clapton—blends elements of jazz, rock, and classical music, resulting in a performance that is truly outstanding due to its sheer originality!
