Description:
A track by DJ Ryowa, a.k.a. Smooth Current—who supported Hydeout Productions during its early days as a resident DJ—has been released by Tribe. Side A features MIDICRONICA, whose track “sanfrancisco” was used as the ending theme for the final episode of the anime “Samurai Champloo.” Over restrained beats and a soundscape with depth, they use rap to etch a quiet tension and a distinct presence. Both tracks on this release are structured to paint vivid scenes through beats and the flow of sound, each carrying its own unique narrative. Drawing on the sensibilities cultivated in Sonart—which originated from KoseNoriko’s sample sources—this work clearly adopts a more beat-driven approach, allowing the narrative to emerge through the unfolding of sound and the use of negative space. While strongly rooted in the context of hip-hop, the work avoids being confined by genre, presenting the quiet intensity characteristic of Tribe.
