Description:
Formed in 1974 by David Sylvian, his brother Steve Jansen, the late Mick Kern, Richard Barbieri of Porcupine Tree, and Rob Dean, JAPAN signed with Ariola Hansa Records in 1976. Although their unique look and glamorous sound, which could be described as the original Visual-kei, were the talk of the town, they failed to gain recognition outside of Japan. However, in 1980, the group moved to Virgin Records, where they changed their sound to make the most of their individuality, and gained high acclaim in their home country of the United Kingdom as well. In 1982, just as the band's popularity was gaining momentum, David Sylvian and Mick Karn broke up due to differences in musical direction. JAPAN's valuable live archive from their Virgin Records days has finally been released! After moving to Virgin Records, JAPAN released "Gentleman Take Polaroids" in 1980, which was ranked No.45 in the U.K. album chart, utilizing the production experience of their previous album "Quiet Life". Finally, they gained a fair reputation in the UK, and "Tin Drum" released in the following year, 1981, was their first big hit in their home country. The band's new musical direction, incorporating oriental music and African beats, and establishing their originality, gained strong support and reached the UK album chart (No.12) and single chart (No.5 "Ghosts"). In the fall of 1982, JAPAN toured Europe, England, and Japan on the "Sons Of Pioneers Tour," and their October 9 performance in the Netherlands was recorded and broadcast on a local radio station and a special BBC radio program. This release is based on the soundtrack used for the broadcast, and includes two encores. Masami Tsuchiya of Ippudo, who was living in London at the time, joined the tour as a guitarist. JAPAN, who had clarified their musical direction with "Tin-Pin Taiko", showed their ability as a live band in this concert, and the performance was full of substance. However, just when it was about to start, David Sylvian and Mick Kern decided to break up due to the difference of musical direction. They choose Japan, where they have been supported since their debut, as the site for their final concert.Imported Japanese vinyl with Japanese obi and bilingual liner notes>David Sylvian (vo, g, kbds)Mick Kern (b, sax, vo)Steve Jansen (ds, perc, kbds)Richard Barbieri (kbds)Masami Tsuchiya (g)
