Description:
Three masterpieces from Brendel's prime years, including Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1, the last recording by S=Isserstedt, are collected on two discs. The two Brahms recordings are the world's first SA-CD recordings of the Brahms concertos. The two Brahms recordings are the world's first SA-CD releases! The first two recordings for the PHILIPS label, Brahms Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2, recorded with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in May and November 1973, and Schumann and Weber with Abbado & the London Symphony Orchestra in 1979, have been split into DISC 1 and 2. The three albums are divided into DISC 1 and DISC 2, for a total of three albums on two discs. Of these three albums, the Schumann and the other with Abbado have been released once on SA-CD hybrid disc outside of general distribution, but the other two are the first SA-CD recordings of the other two. Brendel has recorded the Brahms piano concertos twice for PHILIPS, the second time in 1986 (No. 1) and 1991 (No. 2) with Abbado & the Belairin Philharmonic Orchestra. Of these, No. 1 was awarded the Record Academy Prize in 1987.Brendel himself is a master of the First Symphony, and PHILIPS also released a live recording of the First Symphony with Colin Davis and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1985 as a CD commemorating his 80th birthday. The 1973 recording of the concerto was originally made famous by the sudden death of conductor Isserstedt after the recording, but it has been highly acclaimed as a masterpiece along with the Gilleris recording (Jochum & Beryllin Philharmonic Orchestra) by DG and the Zelkin recording (Sell & Cleveland Orchestra) by CBS, The performance is very well supported by the audience. Unlike the former's rigid performance with its strong hitting and high compositional power, this performance has a different perspective with Brendel's intelligent yet fluid musicality, which was eagerly awaited by listeners at the time. The Second, on the other hand, received less attention than the First because Haitink conducted it instead of Iserstedt. However, Brendel's approach, which is completely different from the Backhaus recording (Böhm & Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) that had already reigned as a masterpiece, is very appealing, and his interaction with the conductor and orchestra and his controlled piano expression and technique are especially wonderful. This is a performance of an established style that led to later re-recordings and deserves more attention than it has received now. The Schumann with Abbado is an overwhelmingly masterful performance, and is one of the definitive recordings of the same piece among the many recordings of the same piece. The expression and lyricism with delicacy are outstanding, and the combination of Schumann and Abbado with just the right amount of tension and dynamism is also evident. This is one of the few Brendel recordings that have been reissued in high sound quality because it is one of the most famous recordings of all time, but it is a performance that clearly shows that it is a performance that has proven itself enough to be released on SA-CD. The sound quality of the four tracks on this reissue has been DSD-edited and mastered to the best of the current state of the art. Please enjoy the true splendor of these historical recordings to the fullest. (1/2)
