Christoph von Dohnányi, one of the last great German-born maestros, still has a devoted following. Beginning in the late 1980s, he focused on recording large-scale works by composers such as Mahler and Bruckner for Decca. These recordings came to be highly acclaimed some time after their initial release and were sometimes traded at high prices on the secondhand market. Tower Records has reissued several of Dohnányi’s recordings in the past, and now we are pleased to present another reissue of a “hidden gem”: Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, which Dohnányi recorded in 1990—his only recording of this work. Shostakovich was a composer who was reevaluated as a “post-Mahler” figure during the height of the Mahler boom, and from the late 1980s onward, even conductors who had not previously performed Shostakovich’s symphonies actively began to feature them in concerts and recordings. The foremost among these conductors was Solti. Around this time, Decca—the label with which Solti was recording—enlisted Ashkenazy to begin recording the second complete set of symphonies since Haitink, and also produced recordings of Shostakovich’s works with Dutoit and Chailly. Amid this trend, Dohnányi also recorded Shostakovich’s symphonies, and the performance was truly outstanding, earning it a “Special Selection” designation in *Record Geijutsu*. The fact that Dohnányi’s only recording was Symphony No. 10 is reminiscent of Karajan, but it differs from Karajan’s approach in that it presents a smart, incisive, meticulous, and refined interpretation of Shostakovich. The ensemble is crisp and well-organized, with every detail clearly defined, reminiscent of the Cleveland Orchestra during the Soloway era. Furthermore, the instrumental balance—which brings the snare drum, an instrument of critical importance in this symphony, to the forefront—is particularly noteworthy. Recordings with this kind of acoustic balance are quite rare, making this a valuable release in that regard as well. It is truly a “hidden gem.” The coupling, Lutosławski’s *Funeral Music*, is a four-part work for string orchestra, composed around the same time as Shostakovich’s symphony. This performance is even more superb, a performance that truly showcases Dohonányi’s expertise in contemporary music.
