Notker (also called Nothker) Barbulus, a Benedictine monk of the abbey of St. Gallen in Switzerland, was a composer, poet, and scholar who was described as "an important figure in the Western Church" and is considered the author of the earliest sequenzia (continuation chants). The sextet, which takes its name from the Latin word for "continuation," is different from Gregorian chant in that it developed independently in medieval Western Europe. This album contains music based on the liturgical calendar contained in the "Liber ymnorum Chant Book" and includes sequenzias for the celebration of the life of Christ and the feasts of the saints. In Notoquel's compositional technique, melodic repetition is applied to entire verses as well as to detailed internal structures, so that the singer can more reliably memorize the melody. Performance practices of the time are not clearly known, but it is likely that the piece was sung by a soloist or a small group of singers, rather than a large chorus.In this recording, too, the emphasis is on clarity of melody and text, and the Germanic Latin pronunciation used by German-speaking scholars is employed.
