Description:
Prague-born composer Josef Bohuslav Ferstel succeeded Dvořák as organist at St. Wojtev's Church and later associated with Mahler in Hamburg. He was an important figure in Czech music, writing five symphonies, songs, operas, and other works in a variety of genres, including 200 pieces. His "Symphony No. 2" is a deeply mournful work written in mourning for the death of his sister. After a meditative first movement, a funeral-like slow movement, and a light scherzo, the final movement sublimates the lament into a powerful hymn of triumph. The symphonic poem "Cyrano de Bergerac" is a suite of "five symphonic images" based on a play by Edmond Rostand. The first piece depicts Cyrano's secret love with cello and oboe, while the second is an introspective interlude that accompanies Roxanne's feelings. The third piece is a scherzo that vividly depicts the dialogue between Cyrano and de Guiche, and the fourth piece is the culmination of the drama, a magnificent music that mixes passion and longing. The fifth piece depicts Cyrano's recollections and closes with a quiet fusion of love and resignation.
