Description:
Messiah" is the most popular of Handel's oratorios. It is a large-scale work depicting the life of Jesus Christ, with lyrics taken from the Bible. The majority of Handel's oratorios were written for the theater and are almost all operatic in nature, with the exception of "Messiah," which is one of the few oratorios in Handel's oeuvre that has religious content. In 1718, his first oratorio with an English text, "Esther," was criticized as a "religious farce" by critics, but Handel was secretly confident in the quality of his work. Although "Messiah" borrows and adapts from other composers and his own works, as was customary at the time, its magnificent melodies, including the "Hallelujah Chorus," are still celebrated today as a masterpiece of choral writing.
