Description:
Born in Bohemia to a father who was a teacher, Cogelf studied music from an early age. He studied law at one time, but eventually decided to become a musician, and made his debut as a composer in 1771, at the age of 24, with a ballet performance. At the time, Vienna was a coveted destination for Bohemian musicians, and Koželupe looked for a chance to work in Vienna, but a contract with the Prague National Theater kept him there for seven years, where he created 25 works. In 1778, he went to Vienna, where he made his name as a virtuoso pianist and wrote numerous sonatas (a complete recording of these sonatas is in progress on the Grand Piano label). He also wrote a vast number of symphonies, chamber works, and religious works as required, but most of them have been forgotten, partly because he was so prolific that critics criticized the quality of his works as poor. Nevertheless, his works, which had such a strong centripetal force that they influenced not only Vanhal but also other early Romantic composers of the same period, still sound appealing today.
