Penderecki’s (b. 1933) Horn Concerto, which received its Japanese premiere in 2008 under his own baton (with the virtuoso Vlatković as soloist), immediately became a popular work thanks to the combination of its somewhat nostalgic soundscapes and the horn’s virtuosic techniques, and A CD release followed almost immediately, prompting many to reflect on “Penderecki’s significance in the contemporary world.” This recording of the Horn Concerto, made in 2010, features a version that has undergone some revisions since its premiere. Perhaps this allows for a more level-headed listening experience, distanced from the frenzy of that time? The other five works are selected primarily from the “edgy Penderecki” of the 1960s. Vito’s steady and assured performance will undoubtedly allow listeners to fully savor the evolution of the Penderecki sound. From pure contemporary music to jazz influences, improvisation, and neo-romanticism—Penderecki’s musical language possesses a flexibility akin to flowing water. Naxos Japan
