Description:
Although somewhat diffuse compared to the much more famous No. 1, it is a work from the same period as the "Italian Fantasy" and the "Serenade for Strings" (this recording is the final draft, revised in its later years). The second movement has solos for violin and cello, which is unique, but it has a distinctive romanticism. The "Concerto Fantasy" is another piano concerto work that Tchaikovsky fans should definitely listen to. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 is the most popular of all Russian concertos, but No. 2 is a more concentrated work. The lyrical slow movement features beautiful solos for violin and cello, creating the effect of a concerto turned into a concerto for piano trio. The final movement, designated Allegro con fuoco, is explosive music. To play this concerto, the pianist is required to combine superb technique with poetic richness.The two-movement "Concerto Fantasy" is a colorful orchestral work with a distinctive thematic conceit and colorful orchestration that also includes glockenspiel and tambourine, but for some reason it has remained in obscurity.
