Description:
<The world's first stereo session recording of Shostakovich's works, made the year after his first performance, under the supervision of the composer. The world's first stereo session recording, made the year after the first performance under the composer's supervision, is now available on SACD for the first time! Newly reissued from the original analog master tapes in Japan for this release. New commentary included. Shostakovich visited Paris in 1958, where he recorded two of his own piano concertos with Cluytens conducting and himself at the piano. At the same time, he was present at the session recording of his Symphony No. 11, which had just been premiered the previous year, and left behind this historic recording. It is surprising that the recording was made in the West before the session recording by Mravinsky (February 1959), but above all, the highly tense performance with earnest conducting and deep reading of the music by Cluytens is more attractive than other recordings. The sound of the French orchestra of the time is also excellent, and it is a miracle that the recording has been preserved in stereo (some defects are attributable to the master). The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in the original country for this release, and mastered separately for the SACD and CD layers. New commentary is included. This is a permanent preservation disc. This disc is a historical recording, but until a time it was considered a forgotten source. When it was first released, it was in mono, and the domestic LP version was discontinued soon after its release, but a stereo version was released overseas in the 1970s. In 1996, TESTAMENT suddenly released a stereo version of the album in CD format, which finally gained recognition. However, the Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2 with Shostakovich as soloist, which were recorded around the same time, were only released in monaural, which is a strange situation. It seems to have been a transitional period, as EMI (Pathe Marconi) finally started stereo recordings in France at this time (from this point on, recordings by Cluytens were also released in stereo). This source also had some parts in mono, and there were some problems caused by the master, such as a partial loss of one channel, so it may have been experimental at the time. The original CD stereo version was finally released as a box set in 2017. (1/2)
