Description:

This disc is a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes history of Klemperer, who passed away on July 6, 1973. This is Klemperer's only appearance at the Salzburg Festival. The sound source was recently discovered in the archives of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) and is being released on a Swedish Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) transcription disc (broadcast source). The Salzburg Festival, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020, has a history that is steeped in the shadow of war. In 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, which wiped out all anti-Nazi and Jewish musicians. Conversely, after the war, artists who had been active during the war were suspended, and while the scars of war remained, the festival was held on August 12, 1945. In 1947, Furtwängler, Böhm, and Klemperer resumed their activities, and this concert was held amidst the resurgence of prewar activity. The main program features Mahler's Symphony No. 4, which was banned under the Nazi regime, as well as Purcell's Suite "The Fairy Queen" and American composer Roy Harris's Symphony No. 3. In 1947, Klemperer went to Europe for his second European tour since his exile to the U.S. In August, he appeared at the Salzburg Festival, conducting an orchestral concert and "The Marriage of Figaro," followed by "Don Giovanni" at the Vienna State Opera, and then the Budapest State Opera. In December, he made a guest appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The Salzburg Festival was the highlight of the year, and there was drama behind the scenes as well. The world premiere of "The Death of Danton," a new opera by the then little-known Austrian composer Gottfried von Einem (1918-1996), was to be given by Klemperer at the Salzburg Festival. However, Klemperer accepted the commission, lost interest, and cancelled the performance. This incident prevented Klemperer from appearing at the Salzburg Festival. On the other hand, Flitchai, who appeared as a substitute, had the opportunity to make a name for himself as a conductor. It is a very interesting look behind the scenes of history from a single concert.
