Weinberg: Sinfonietta No. 1 and No. 2 Svetlanov & the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra Mieczysław Weinberg fled the ravages of war by seeking asylum in the former Soviet Union from his native Poland, but faced hardships—including performance bans and arrest—due to anti-Semitic campaigns. Thanks to Shostakovich—who had been a supporter since his exile—and the recent increase in recordings, Weinberg’s orchestral works are undergoing a reevaluation. This collection features the “Symphonietta No. 1,” rich in Jewish folk elements, and the “Symphonietta No. 2,” which seems to stand in stark contrast to the first; and the “Symphony No. 7,” with its striking opening harpsichord passage—all conducted by Svetlanov and Barshai.
