Following the highly acclaimed Bach Unaccompanied Violin Works (GCAC-1002/3), Szigeti's second release in the XRCD series, this time the remaining four CDs of Mozart's Violin Sonatas will be released in two sets of two discs. Once again, the official sound sources provided by VanguardClassic have been remastered by renowned engineer Kazuya Sugimoto and carefully crafted into XRCD, a high-quality sound format that can be played on ordinary CD players. Originally famous for its distinctive on-mic recording, the XRCD version has been made much more vivid and realizes an unprecedented sound image, with Szigeti's martial violin looming with an overwhelming presence that is almost frightening. The liner notes include an 18-page commentary by Kazunobu Yasuda (common to both I and II), which provides a complete picture of the violin sonatas along with the flow of Mozart's life. The performance of K. 379 is tremendous. The profound adagio is a song of honest earnestness. Then, after the Allegro, the passionate G minor! The music that Szigeti seeks is not contained in a single note, but blends into the surrounding sounds and leaves a raw imprint.The following variation, which is supposed to be in a plain major key, has an unusual atmosphere. The sound of the violin glows bluish-white in the darkness. The scratching pitchcart is also intense. Two pieces for piano are also included. He plays fine passages and trills as beautifully as a ball, and the piano is truly Mozart-like. Listening to this, you will realize that he was a wonderful Mozart player who should be remembered.
