Description:
Born in Berlin in 1863, Hugo (or Hugo) Kaun studied in Berlin before moving to the United States in 1886, where he made a name for himself as a choral conductor and educator within Milwaukee’s German-American community. He returned to Germany in the early 20th century and continued his career there, playing a central role in the Berlin music scene—including his appointment as a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1912. He masterfully employed the rich harmonies and orchestration of the late Romantic period, composing works across a wide range of genres, from symphonies to choral pieces. His representative works include the symphonic poem “In the Forest” (cpo555572), which synthesized his American experiences, and “Sir John Falstaff,” composed in 1904. The latter achieved success by programmatically depicting the hero of Shakespeare’s play and served as an important stepping stone to his subsequent grand Symphony No. 2. The Symphony in C minor is a work that emphasizes gravitas and a sense of pathos. The timpani are used with great weight, and sounds reminiscent of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 can be heard in places, while passages in the style of *The Ring of the Nibelung* appear throughout, such as when the horns play phrases closely resembling Siegfried’s leitmotif. The long, sweeping undulations of the slow movement are Brucknerian in character, and the work can be considered one of the culmination points of late German Romantic symphonic music. Naxos Japan
