Born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1899 (though some sources suggest 1900), Seidel was recognized by the renowned teacher Auer as possessing talent on par with Heifetz. Following his highly successful Carnegie Hall debut in 1918, he signed a contract with Columbia Records. This album serves as a sequel to the previously released collection of Toscha Seidel’s recordings for Columbia Records (1918–20). One of the joys of reissues from this era is encountering repertoire that is rarely performed or recorded today, as well as interpretations of classic masterpieces that differ from those of the present day. On this album, Braga’s “Serenade of the Angels” and Fibich’s “Poetic Memories” are prime examples of the former. As for the latter, you will be surprised by the arrangement and performance of Sibelius’s “Sad Waltz.” While the album is generally performed stylishly at a moderate tempo, Bach’s “Air on the G String” is particularly impressive, sung meditatively at a very leisurely pace. In the final two tracks, you can fully enjoy Seidel’s characteristic expression and lyrical sensibility, featuring bold tempo changes, rich vibrato, and portamento that effectively plays with dynamics.
