Description:
From Iceland, a hub of contemporary music, comes a complete recording of the symphonies Arvo Pärt had completed by 2026! Pärt’s Symphony No. 1, written in 1963 shortly after his graduation from the Tallinn Conservatory, features a two-movement structure in the Baroque style—a “Canon” and a “Prelude and Fugue”—yet its harmony is extremely avant-garde, strongly evoking the influence of the twelve-tone technique. In his Symphony No. 2 from 1966, he adopted serialism, unfolding complex textures reminiscent of the Polish school, such as Penderecki. Symphony No. 3, written in 1971, reflects the results of Pärt’s research into Gregorian chant and medieval polyphonic music, to which he devoted himself in the late 1960s, and exhibits a transitional character leading toward his later tintinnabuli style. After a hiatus of about 35 years, the Fourth Symphony, “Los Angeles,” written between 2007 and 2008, features a unique instrumentation of strings, harp, timpani, and percussion. Composed based on the Orthodox “Canon of Repentance” and “Canon to the Guardian Angel,” it exudes a religious and devout atmosphere. Eva Ollikainen was born in Espoo, Finland, in 1982. After studying piano, violin, and French horn, she received conducting instruction from Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam at the Sibelius Academy. She made her debut with the NHK Symphony Orchestra at the NHK Music Festival in October 2025, showcasing a musical interpretation characterized by meticulous yet dynamic and energetic conducting. Here, together with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, where she has served as principal conductor since the 2020–21 season, she accurately captures Pärt’s evolving compositional style over time and the distinctive sound that runs through his work. While the ECM recording of Pärt’s complete symphonies featuring Tonu Kallikõst and the Wroclaw Philharmonic exists, this new release—coming nearly a decade later and resulting from a collaboration between musicians from Finland and Iceland, two nations leading the contemporary music scene—can be seen as a testament to the broadening and deepening reception of Pärt’s music. Released as an SACD hybrid disc with a wide dynamic range. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by Noriyuki Komuro. Naxos Japan
