Description:

[The Frankfurt Opera presents a new production of the grand opera masterpiece *La Juive*!] The opera *La Juive* is a representative work of grand opera by Frémantel-Alévi, first performed in 1835 at the Opéra de Paris, then the center of the European opera world. The work achieved international success and was later praised by Wagner and Mahler. However, with the exception of a few pieces—such as Eleazar’s aria “Rachel, by Heaven’s Grace,” famously performed by Enrico Caruso—performances became extremely rare in the 20th century. In recent years, however, its value has been reevaluated, and it has been added to the repertoire of major European opera houses. Tatiana Gurbak’s production, based on the story set during the Council of Constance in the early 15th century as depicted in Scribe’s libretto, takes a modern approach that highlights timeless social issues (collective intolerance between different religions) and the resulting conflicts and love-hate relationships between men and women, as well as between parents and children. However, this approach differs from what is commonly known as a “reinterpreted” production. The role of Eleazar, a Jewish craftsman, is played by John Osborne, a master of bel canto singing; the role of his daughter Rachel (who is actually the daughter of Cardinal Broni, from whom she was separated at a young age) is played by Amber Blade, a renowned dramatic soprano known for her title roles in *Salome* and *Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk*; The supporting cast features the resonant lyric tenor Gérard Schneider as Samuel, Rachel’s lover (who is actually Duke Leopold, the persecutor of Jan Hus, declared a heretic at the Council of Constance), and Monika Butskowska, whose crystalline coloratura singing is magnificent, as Eudoxia. He served as Music Director at the Komische Oper Berlin from 2012 to 2017, and has since been in high demand at renowned opera houses such as La Scala, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Paris Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Dresden State Opera. He leads the Frankfurt Opera’s orchestra and chorus, infusing the production with the taut, dynamic energy characteristic of verismo opera. Naxos Japan
