Description:

Traditions of Central Germany Passed Down by Relatives Who Also Became the Father-in-Law of the Great Bach Johann Michael Bach was the son of Heinrich Bach, the younger brother of Christoph Bach, the grandfather of the Great Bach. He was also the younger brother of Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), whom the Great Bach described as a "profound composer." This composer, who was also the father of Johann Sebastian Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara Bach, was born and trained in Arnstadt. He later became organist at the church in the nearby town of Gehlen, where he lived out his life. While his name frequently appears in vocal music collections highlighting 17th-century Bach family works, his organ compositions remained largely unknown for a long time. However, the discovery in 1985 at Yale University of the Neumeister Manuscript (a manuscript originating from organist J. G. Neumeister, a contemporary of Mozart, containing many early works by Johann Sebastian Bach), which contained no fewer than 24 of his compositions, finally brought his keyboard music style to light.Based on the melodies of traditional Lutheran chorales, master organist Cindy Castillo—a leading figure on the Belgian scene—delivers a thoughtful interpretation of these exquisite organ chorales. She faithfully employs the archaic style reminiscent of early 20th-century composers like Swelinck and Scheidemann, allowing the fresh melodic beauty to soar. The organ, completed in 2023 by the renowned builder Dominique Thomas's workshop, incorporates characteristics of organs from the late Baroque period found in central and northern Germany, where the Bach family was active. It delivers an elegant, antique sound, making this a captivating recording from every perspective. Naxos Japan
