Description:

This is the world premiere recording of Vivanco's Requiem, which adds a new page to the lineage of masterpieces of the "Mass for the Dead" by composers of the Spanish Renaissance such as Victoria, Morales, and Guerrero. The person and work of Vivanco have been little known until recently, but one of his most important works has been recorded here thanks to the enthusiasm of conductor David Allinson, who has been fascinated by the music of this period since he was a teenager. Vivanco's "Mass for the Dead" has never been published and has been handed down in manuscript form to the Cathedral of Salamanca and the Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe in Spain, although there are some differences between the two that have troubled researchers. For this recording, we have collaborated with Tony Deymer, a member of the Renaissance Singers and an avid student of Spanish Renaissance music, to prepare a performance score. The two most significant differences between the two versions, the Kyrie and the Sanctus, are included in both the Salamanca and Guadalupe editions. The Benedictus and Agnus Dei are not in the Salamanca version, so the Guadalupe version is performed as is. Other motets by Vivanco and other composers of the same period are included, appropriate to the album's theme. The Renaissance Singers, which celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2024, is known for its appropriate musical understanding and sophisticated performances despite its amateur status, and in this recording, SATB gives a full performance with a total of 24 members (7/6/5/6).
