Vycheslav Novák studied under Dvořák and trained many composers as a professor at the Prague Conservatory, and since 1890 has collected and studied Moravian and Slovak folk music, which he has applied to his works. He composed many symphonic poems and orchestral suites, as well as cantatas, operas, and symphonies with chorus. Piano Concerto in E minor" was written during his student days. It has a structure in which a single theme is developed throughout the entire work, and it also shows an ambitious attempt at formality. It was premiered in November 1915, 20 years after its completion, but Novák himself was never satisfied with the work, and it was never published. The ballet pantomime "The Young Girl," a fantastical tragedy inspired by the works of writer Svatopluk Cev and a symbolic tale of youth and death, was premiered in 1929 under the baton of renowned conductor Václav Thalich. In this recording, Polovic has compiled his own version of the suite, which makes the most of the variety of music. Nikotina" is a humorous fantasy play, a sister piece to "The Young Girl," which was completed in four weeks. It depicts the dream adventures of a monk and a visionary woman, Nikotina, and was first performed at the Prague National Theatre in 1930. Thalich edited the suite version. Naxos Japan
