Hans Gall actively promoted choral activities in Vienna, Mainz, and in exile in Edinburgh, where he founded and conducted many choral groups and left behind many choral works. This album, the third in a series of choral works from the 1950s, demonstrates Gall's creative spirit, which remained undiminished despite a 15-year ban and exile, especially "One Summer Day," commissioned by the University of Bryn Mawr, which stands out among his choral works for its scale and charm. The work, which features nine poems, including Arnold's "Lament" and Harvey's "The Duck," combines lyricism and warmth. The Borealis, the professional young group responsible for the performance, was founded in the north of England in 2016 and pursues a rich and supple sound under conductors Bridget Budge and Stephen Muir, while shining a light on composers whose reputations are not yet firmly established.
