Description:

The religious music of composer Schopp, who wrote the melody to "O Lord, Joy of Man's Desiring," has been recorded by an up-and-coming German old music ensemble! Born in Hamburg in 1590, the son of a musician, Johann Schopp received his musical education first from his father and later from William Braid, who was known to have served at the court of King Christian IV of Denmark. In 1633, King Christian IV invited Heinrich Schütz to Copenhagen to compose and perform music for the prince's wedding. Schopp joined him as a violin virtuoso and played the wedding music. Schütz then took on the role of composing and performing festive and church liturgical music for the wealthy citizens of his hometown of Hamburg.During his lifetime he was greatly admired as a composer and violinist, and made important contributions to early German Baroque music, but today his name is only mentioned as the composer of the chorale melody (not included on this album) from which Bach's "O Lord, Joy of Man's Desiring" was derived. The composer of the chorale melody The "Religious Concertos, Volume 1" by Schopf is a collection of church music in the new style introduced into Lutheran liturgical music by Schütz, Praetorius, and others. Religious Konzerts, which combined the Italian concerto style with German texts, were music for solo or major chorus accompanied by instrumental ensembles and became the mainstream of German church music in the 17th century. The majority of Schopp's works are simple compositions with solo or solo bass and basso continuo, but some of them are relatively large pieces (tracks 1 and 12) with two-part chorus accompanied by string ensemble. In this CD, the store's instrumental ensemble pieces are added between the pieces from the "Religious Concertos" collection, showing the skill of a violinist who has been praised for his excellent technique. Founded in 2018, the vocal ensemble Erpgut mainly performs works from the German Baroque period in its repertoire, and its CD debut, Bach's "John Passion (2nd draft)," won the prestigious OPUS KLASSIK prize (2020). They have been invited to numerous music festivals, including the Bach Marathon in Leipzig, where their high singing and ensemble abilities have been well received. Here, the five singers, both solo and as an ensemble, convey the wonder of the work. (1/2) Naxos Japan
