The album features Baroque and traditional Christmas songs as "light that illuminates the age of darkness". This Christmas album features Christmas songs written in Germany around the time of World War II, interspersed with various folk songs from the Middle Ages, and religious songs by the great German composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is performed by Ensemble La Silla, which has released one album of German Baroque religious works before Bach on Carpe Diem (CD-16330). Soloist Resch has a beautiful voice full of warmth that conveys the flavor of the verses well, and her interpretation is exquisite, making full use of her extended upper register. The title piece was written at the end of 1937, just before the Nazi regime of Germany annexed the Czech Republic and Austria. The last song, "Under the Protection of Goodness," was written by Dietrich Bonheffer (1906-1945), a resistance poet who was executed as a political prisoner a few years later in April, just before the liberation of Germany by the Allied Forces. The performers say, "From these songs, we can rediscover Christmas as a message that it is not just a traditional event, but that light can shine even in the darkness.The string ensemble, one for each part, is joined by Anna Schall, a master of zink (woodwind cornet), and the instrumentation, with percussion accented occasionally by bass keys and strings, is dependable, and the vocal parts, which sometimes expand to four players, are filled with the breath of Germany.
