A member of the Royal Belgian Academy of Music, Benoit Mernier studied composition under Philippe Bouwmans, and his works have been performed on the world stage at the Royal Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Rhine Opera in Strasbourg. However, his musical activities have their origins in the organ, and while he has published many works for organ himself, he is also a highly skilled performer, and since 2019 he has succeeded his teacher Bernard Foclour as Professor of Organ at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He was one of the advisors for the construction of the new German Baroque organ at the Saint-Loux church in Namur, a city with a thriving antique music scene, and this album is a valuable demonstration of his skills as a performer using this very instrument, without including his own works. Through the powerful Buxtehude works with effective use of the foot keys, the great Choral Fantasia by the early genius Bruns, and the important Bach works, Mernier's sensitivity to sound as a composer is fully expressed in his outstanding aptitude as a performer of Baroque works. The performance is a perfect example of his aptitude as a performer of Baroque works.The effective choice of registers brings out the full potential of this new instrument, which is said to be close to Bach's ideal, and is a major attraction. The work of the spirited engineer Denis Gerdon, who vividly captured even the lingering reverberations in the moderate reverberation, is also a must-hear. (Naxos Japan)
