Description:

Mahler:. [Contents Symphony No. 7 in E minor "Night Song 1. I. Langsam. Adagio - Allegro risoluto, ma non troppo 2. II. Nachtmusik I. Allegro moderato III.Scherzo.Schattenhaft - Trio 4. IV. Nachtmusik II. Tempo I (Allegro ordinario) -Tempo II (Allegro moderato, ma energico) Performers Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Sir Simon Rattle (conductor) Recording: November 6-8, 2024 Munich, Isar Philharmonie in Gasthaig HP8 (live) Mahler recommended the Seventh Symphony, which he completed after the magnificent and tragic Sixth Symphony, writing to the concert organizers that it was "his finest work," and although the premiere was indeed a success, he soon came to feel that the work was too complex. To soften the difficulty, he named the second and fourth movements "Night Music" (the "Night Song" that runs throughout the work was given by a third party), but to his wife Alma he wrote, "What matters is what man becomes through restless life and earnest effort. The work is a mixture of joviality, drinking, awe, joy, and frenzy, with the addition of instruments such as guitar and mandolin, which are rare in modern symphonic music, and the development of the music seems to stray from logic, but finally comes to a glorious conclusion, which may be Mahler's own image of "restless life and earnest effort. It may be Mahler's own image of "a life of restlessness and dedicated effort". Rattle, who has earned a distinguished reputation for his Mahler performances, also recorded this piece in 1991 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on EMI, and it is highly acclaimed as a landmark masterpiece. In this recording, Rattle clearly handled the ever-changing musical ideas and complex structures without simplifying them, and gave an overwhelmingly convincing performance of this nearly 80-minute work, which is by no means an easy work to understand.Rattle's performance of No. 7 in the Berlin Philharmonic's complete Mahler symphony cycle (2016) is another testament to his understanding of the music and his conducting prowess. The fact that Rattle will be performing this work with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks on its first tour of Japan shows his confidence in this work. This live recording with the orchestra, which is regarded as one of the world's finest orchestras, and which is dedicated to Rattle's interpretation, is a must-see. The Japanese translation of the commentary is included in the original booklet only for the limited first pressing. Limited edition (Naxos Japan)
