Description:
This disc combines old and new works of "choral chant (church) concertos" of the Russian Orthodox Church, mainly masterpieces by Schnittke. In the Orthodox Church, where instrumental music was not permitted, "choral chant concertos" were developed by using the chorus like an orchestra and combining multiple solos and tutti like Western ensemble concertos. Vedeli of Ukraine was an early composer of this genre, and Bortnyansky was a major exponent of the form; after the Russian Revolution of 1917, the choral concerto seemed to decline for a time, but Schnittke, born in 1934, felt an affinity for the mysticism of the Russian Orthodox Church and began to play the medieval Armenian poet He wrote a four-part choral chant concerto with the text of a lament by Gregory of Narek (951-1003). It is a masterpiece that expresses his religious views while taking an archaic style. The SWR Vocal Ensemble, a selection of members of the Southwest German Radio Choir, gives a dynamic performance of this work. Naxos Japan
