This is the second CHANDOS album by the Corvus Consort, led by Freddie Crowley. After gaining attention for their previous work with a saxophone quartet (CHAN20260), they focus on music for female chorus and harp on this album. The album centers on three of Gustav Holst's works for female chorus: "Two Oriental Pictures," "Funeral Songs and Wedding Songs," and "Choral Hymn from the Rig Veda. These are sensitive and lyrical works that could only come from Holst, who had taught at a girls' school and was a proponent of female choral singing. Other works include those by Holst's daughter Imogen and Elizabeth Poston, a female composer of her generation, as well as works by other modern and contemporary female composers. Also heard are two world premiere recordings of works by Indian-born, U.S.-based composer Shruti Rajakassel, who, like Holst, was inspired by the Rig Veda. The beautiful harmonies that make the most of the mellow sounds of the church are captured in a high-quality recording and are available on the SACD hybrid disc. Naxos Japan
