The album is a testament to the surprisingly large number of talented women composers who were active in France during the 17th and 18th centuries, a time when composition seemed to be overwhelmingly the work of men.The Baroque violinist Sophie de Bardonèche, one of the founding members of Le Consort, and the new generation of French harpsichordist Justin Taylor, will play a varied combination of instruments from solo to string ensemble in an exquisite program of masterpieces from the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, to the Rococo period of Louis XV. The program features a collection of masterpieces from the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, to Louis XV, the era of Rococo culture, through a variety of instrumental combinations from solo to string ensemble. The performance interpretation captures the essence of the breath of the women who were forgotten by posterity and overshadowed by men such as Lully, Marais, Couperin, and de Lalande, who were key figures in the royal family. The viola da gamba player Lucille Boulanger, who has been active as a soloist, has a beautiful and flowing bass tone, and the instrumental excerpts from operas and vocal pieces with other string players are also dramatic. The liner notes (in French, English, and German, with Japanese translation for the domestic edition) include Bardonèche's own comments as well as a precise background commentary. This is an excellent project that does not end with the relatively famous Jaquet de la Guerre alone, but also approaches the truth of the old days of France, which was supported by the talents of women.
