Description:

Awarded the Goethe Medal in 2021. Toshio Hosokawa's fourth collection of orchestral works is attracting more and more attention from around the world! Inspired by Hermann Hesse's poem of the same name, the trumpet concerto "In the Mist" depicts a scene of a lonely walking trumpeter singing to the world. The soloist is world-renowned player Jeroen Berwaltz. Berwaltz, who has performed this and other Hosokawa works many times in the past, will give a magnificent performance. The violin concerto "Genesis" (Generation) was composed as a birthday gift for the violinist who was responsible for the first performance, and Hosokawa said that he sees the soloist as a person and the orchestra as nature and the universe surrounding the soloist. From the beginning, the orchestra repeats waves that evoke the image of amniotic fluid nurturing life, and the universal drama of finding harmony in the midst of conflict is expressed. In this recording, the outstanding virtuosity of the young soloist, Paul Huang, is a must-hear. The piece "Vortex," which was influenced by the sho (Japanese bamboo flute), makes effective use of the spiral sounds created by the instruments. The opening piece "Sakura" is Hosokawa's arrangement for orchestra of one of Japan's most beloved pieces.Hosokawa was present at all recording sessions, and the Hague Residential Orchestra, conducted by his friend and confidant, Quasi-Merkle, skillfully utilizes dramatic intonation and delicate timbre to convey the composer's image in its entirety. A Japanese commentary by the composer is included. Naxos Japan
