Luzzaschi, Luzzasco (c.1545-1607)

Description:

The album is a collection of works by three up-and-coming female singers active at the forefront of European music, mainly works by the great master Lutzaski, which were sung in a unique female voice trio formation. The story begins in the ancient city of Ferrara, which was home to the prestigious Este family and one of the most advanced court cultures in Europe by the early 17th century, when it was confiscated as a Papal territory. The court, known as the birthplace of some of the most important painters in the history of art, was also the home of some of the finest polyphonic musicians from the Renaissance period. The "Concerto delle Donne," a group of female musicians, became highly renowned at the end of the 16th century through their association with the great Netherlandish masters of the past, such as Josquin Desprez, Obrecht, Villalto, and Cipriano de Laurette. The high level of skill of these musicians made musicians from other Italian cities jealous, and in Rome, Giulio Caccini, the composer of "The Beautiful Amarilli," organized a similar ensemble with his own daughters. Here, we have music from Lutzaski's song cycle, which included many masterpieces for the court of Ferrara, as well as a female trio from the masterpiece opera by Caccini's daughter Francesca, and music by Marenzio and Monteverdi, important madrigale composers of the same period. The unique sound world of the late Renaissance and early Baroque period, which makes good use of this composition, is explored while fully enjoying the strange harmonic changes woven by overlapping melodies in the same register. The bass soloists, including Yoann Moulin, who has made many solo recordings with RICERCAR, provide a fascinating interplay of plucked and bowed strings that precisely support the subtleties of the songs.
