Description:
The SWR2 New Talent Program, launched in 2013, supports young talented artists to launch their careers. Selected artists will receive promotion from the broadcaster for three years, and the winner of this honor in 2021 was cellist Lionel Martin from Tübingen, Germany. He studied with Josef Harsten at the Tübingen Music School and has been studying with Thomas Grossenbacher at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2020. 2017, backed by the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dan Ettinger. Since then, he has performed widely from Europe to South America, and in 2017 he became a scholarship recipient of the Anne Sofie Mutter Foundation, touring with Mutter and other scholarship recipients, and his talent is highly regarded. On this album, Martín performs John Tavener's "The Miraculous Veil" and "The Holy of Holies," a work premiered by Stephen Isserlis in 1989 that depicts the life of the Virgin Mary as she observes the birth, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ; the cello is treated like a human voice The cello is treated like a human voice, and together with the string orchestra that sings slowly, the listener is transported into a spiritual world. The Sacred is a twelve-voice choral work that reflects Tavener's mysticism. It was written with the idea that it would be performed during the closing of the coffin at a Christian Orthodox funeral, and the cello melody represents a priest, or icon of Christ. The choral part of this piece is conducted by Yuval Weinberg, born in 1990, who studied music in Tel Aviv and studied in Berlin and Oslo, and is the new principal conductor of the SWR Vocal Ensemble from the 2020/21 season.
