Description:
A collection of chamber works by Bohemian-born, German composer Leopold Gassmann. He is said to have studied under Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna, but details are not known. He wrote 22 operas in the Italian style, as well as numerous chamber and religious works, and was invited to Vienna as Gluck's successor, where he was appointed court music director in 1772. One of Gassmann's achievements is that he recognized Salieri's talent in Venice, where he was traveling in 1765, and brought him to Vienna to educate him. Today, his operas are rarely heard, but they were highly popular during his lifetime. Two of the quintets on this album are arrangements of popular arias from his hit opera "Amor et Psyche. The other works were favorites of Emperor Joseph II, who was a great admirer of the composer. The virtuoso Lajos Lenches and his colleagues bring new life to these beautifully resonant works.
