This is the fifth release of #bruckner2024, a project led by the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record all versions of Bruckner's symphonies by 2024, the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth. This release is the first draft of Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 (composed in 1873), which has the most number of different drafts among Bruckner's symphonies. The score uses the Novak edition. Of the various drafts of the Third, the first draft is the longest, and it also has the most motifs taken from Wagner's operas, from which the nickname "Wagner" is derived, making it a unique attraction. However, although it is hard to believe now, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which attended the rehearsal for the first performance, declared the work "unplayable," and the premiere did not take place. Compared to the revised version that followed, the first draft is sometimes considered "less organized" and "less refined in compositional technique," but it is highly regarded because it retains Bruckner's innovative ideas in a more original form, and opportunities for performance and recording have been steadily increasing. The performance by Markus Poschner and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra is especially fast in the fast movement, which gives the work a youthful spirit. In the slow movement, on the other hand, the tempo is slowed down, creating a calm and puzzled atmosphere.Compared with the performance time (23:59/18:53/06:09/16:17) of the Inbal/Frankfurt disc, which marked a turning point in the reevaluation of the first draft of No. 3, there is a marked difference especially in the first two movements, and you can imagine that the image of the performance is quite different.
