Description:
Pianist Aurel Martin, who studied at the Paris Conservatory as well as in Cremona and London, created this album with his hometown of Getary, a port town in the French Basque Country in mind. The main work is a piano concerto by Ravel, a great composer from the Basque Country, in a version arranged for piano and a small ensemble of eight players, and performed by a group of friends who know each other well. The album is a beautiful collection of other well-known and unknown pieces based on or close to Basque and sea impressions. The last two pieces are "Hotel California," a heavy piano piece that boldly deforms the image of the original, and "Sur la planche (On a Surfboard)," a piece by the French band La Femme that is almost directly replaced on the piano with a phrase from Saint-Saens' "Aquarium" inserted in the middle section. The album also includes two rock pieces, "Sur la planche (On a Surfboard)," a song by the French band La Femme that was replaced almost entirely by the piano and a phrase from Saint-Saens' "Aquarium" inserted in the middle.
