Description:

The origin of France, the kingdom of wind instruments! The "Sun King" Louis XIV made a great contribution to the world of music, bringing French court culture to a level that attracted the attention of monarchs all over Europe. One of the three important sections of the royal orchestra, along with the chamber (chambre) and chapel (chapelle) orchestras, was the "Grand Stable Band" (grande técurie), a brass band that performed mainly in the open air. The double reed oboe was adopted by court orchestras all over Europe, and Ricercar traces its roots back to the early 17th century, from the birth of the oboe to its first glory, using a variety of carefully verified reproductions of ancient instruments. The 18 performers are all from the same family. The 18 musicians are led by Jeremy Papaserzio, a Dulzean (Renaissance bassoon) virtuoso who attracted attention for his reproduction of Handel's "Fireworks at the Royal Palace" under the direction of Hervé Nicquet. In addition to rare oboes and bassoons from the early days of the period, a chromorne (a type of double reed instrument unique to 17th century France, different from a crumhorn), and an unvented natural trumpet, the album features the percussionist Marie-Ange Petit, who has played in many famous performances by Les Arts Florissants and the Orchestre des Champs Elysées, and a unique sound world with magnificent and exquisite accents. The sound world is unique, with magnificent and exquisite accents by percussionist Marie-Ange Petit, and the result is a frontier period winds album that is even more advanced than similar albums in the past. The liner notes (in both English and French) on the instruments used and the details of the sources of the scores related to the history of the royal family make this an album that should not be missed in learning more about the origins of French wind music art.
