Description:

Alexander Scheichelt (1887-1964), a Ukrainian-born violinist and conductor, was a leading figure in the development of contemporary music in Switzerland. Between 1920 and 1943, the orchestra gave 51 world premieres and 215 Zurich premieres, including works by contemporary Swiss composers, and discovered new musical talent that would spread its fame beyond Switzerland to the world. In 1943, however, Scheichelt, a Jewish immigrant, stepped down as music director, and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra was disbanded (the orchestra of the same name, which is still active today, was founded in 1945 by Edmond de Staats, and there is no direct connection between the two organizations. (The orchestra of the same name was founded by Edmond de Staats in 1945, and there is no direct connection between the two organizations.)The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the publication of the book "Zivilstand Musiker: Alexander Schaichet und das erste Kammerorchester der Schweiz" ("Citizen Musicians: Alexander Schaichet and das erste Kammerorchester der Schweiz"). The book "Citizen Musiker: Alexander Schaichet and the First Chamber Orchestra of Switzerland" was published and various events were held in the area. CD 1 tells his biography (in German) with music associated with him, and CD 2 features the music of various modern Swiss composers he introduced.
