Description:
Alphonse Szczerbinski was a Polish late Romantic composer. After studying composition in Berlin with Eduard Grell and Woldemar Bargiel, he returned to Poland and became a popular music teacher for upper-class families. However, this life did not satisfy his aspirations as a performer and composer, and when his application for a teaching position at the Cracow Conservatory was rejected, and he was eventually forced into financial difficulties, Szczerbinski gave up on success in this life and sought salvation in religion. He went to a meeting with a priest he relied on, but a malfunction in the heating system of the inn caused him to inhale large quantities of smoke, which damaged his health, and instead of entering a monastery, he ended his life at the age of 36 at the home of a relative. Many of his works are believed to have been destroyed by the composer himself or lost during World War I, but through the efforts of the composer's niece, Maria Szczerbinska, some 65 works have been identified. In this second collection, 12 pieces are presented, including a completed version by Koukl. Enjoy a variety of works with beautiful and lovely melodies, including a fugue with exquisite counterpoint, a Mendelssohn-like "mute" and a polonaise reminiscent of Chopin. Naxos Japan
