Shostakovich and Weinberg were active in the Soviet Union in the 20th century. Despite their age difference, Shostakovich recognized Weinberg's talent, and Weinberg was greatly influenced by Shostakovich, and the two remained close friends. Anne-Katharina Schlauber, the violinist of Trio Vivente, was so moved by a radio broadcast of the story surrounding the premiere of Shostakovich's "Seven Romances" that she was eager to include it in her repertoire. It took him longer than he expected to find the right female singer who could sing in Russian, but he finally did when he met Katharina Kasper. Schlauber then realized the close connection between Shostakovich and Weinberg while researching Weinberg's Trio, and here the album was born, combining songs and trios by the two composers.
